Alumni Spotlight: Leading with Heart in Elgin TX

Shametra McGregor
Operation Turkey

For Shametra McGregor, making a difference in her community has always been more than a passion—it’s a way of life. A proud graduate of Austin Community College’s Class of 2019, Shametra has spent over two decades advocating for hunger relief and community support across Central Texas. Her journey has now led her to Elgin, where she serves as the City Leader for Operation Turkey Elgin.

Shametra’s commitment to service began in 2006 when she volunteered at the H-E-B Feast of Sharing event. Over the years, she deepened her impact, dedicating herself to causes like United Way’s Day of Caring, food drives for the Central Texas Food Bank, and crisis intervention work for crime victims. After delivering 25 meals to Elgin, while volunteering with Operation Turkey Austin. Shametra recognized a growing need in Elgin, Shametra sprang into action.

In 2023, she launched Operation Turkey Elgin, an initiative dedicated to preparing and delivering Thanksgiving meals to those in need. In its inaugural year, with the help of 65 volunteers, the program delivered over 1,100 meals—a remarkable accomplishment that reflects both Shametra’s leadership and the community’s support.

This year, Shametra has her sights set even higher. With a goal to deliver 2,500 meals in 2024, Operation Turkey Elginis once again rallying volunteers, sponsors, and donors to help bring food and hope to families, seniors, churches, and shelters across Elgin and surrounding areas. Operation Turkey Elgin’s goal was surpassed and 2,590 meals were prepared and delivered.

Her work has not gone unnoticed. On Thanksgiving Day 2024, Shametra’s efforts were honored with a proclamation from the City of Elgin signed and presented by Therese McShan Mayor of Elgin, celebrating her unwavering dedication to creating positive change. Reflecting on this success, Shametra shared, “Our volunteers and community are the heart and soul of this mission. Together, we’re ensuring that no one goes hungry.”

Shametra credits her time at ACC for shaping her commitment to service and community leadership. With her trademark optimism and boundless energy, she encourages everyone to get involved—whether by volunteering, donating, or simply spreading the word.
